WAT WIL JE WORDEN

ALS JE LATER DOOD BENT?

"What do you want to be when you're dead?" is a project that offers a porcelain solution for the future use of human remains from the resomation industry. It also provides an object for the storage of personal items, highlighting a shift in perspective on death and inspiring people to think about how they want to be remembered in the future. The project combines references and associations from different time periods in which death was openly discussed.

Resomation is a process that dissolves the body in water and sodium hydroxide, leaving only pure calcium phosphate behind. The calcium phosphate can be mixed with porcelain to be casted in any shape or form. This way people can decide themselves what they want to become once they are dead. This project uses calcium phosphate from animals donated by Dierencrematorium Novo, and the porcelain objects are created by Idwert Petter.

The storage object is inspired by the Dutch graftrommel (grave drum), a new type of tombstone used from 1850-1950. Dylan Eno's modern version is made of brass, glass, and rubber, making it water and fire-resistant. It is portable, fitting in with modern nomadic lifestyles, and features a rotating mechanism that allows for customization of its interior or exterior positioning. Both the extensive use of brass and the rotation mechanism are inspired by Victorian mourning brooches. "What do you want to be when you're dead?" encourages a thought-provoking discussion on our relationship with death and the ways we choose to be remembered.
